For making wooden plugs or crankbaits, you'll need a lathe and cutting tools. A small modelmaker's wood lathe will do, but do not skimper on the cutting tools. You'll need at least a high quality gauge and a similar flat chisel, both made out of HSS steel or better. This will set you back almost as much as the lathe itself...
